Contract killer seeks UP Police help over unpaid fees for murdering lawyer

A year-old murder case in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut has taken a surprising turn after a contract killer lodged a complaint with police for not being paid the promised sum for the crime. The killer alleged that he was given a contract of Rs 20 lakh to kill Anjali, a lawyer, but did not receive the amount.
Anjali was shot dead nearly a year ago by two assailants as she was returning home from a milk booth. Her husband and in-laws were initially detained on suspicion of hiring the killers over a property dispute. However, they were later released after the police cleared them of any involvement.
Days after the crime, police arrested the alleged shooters, Neeraj Sharma and Yashpal. They were said to have been hired by a man named Suresh Bhati. Investigators revealed that the assailants stayed at Neeraj’s house the night before the murder. The police also recovered two scooters and a pistol linked to the crime.
Now, Neeraj Sharma, who was recently released on bail, has filed a complaint with the police, alleging that Anjali was actually killed at the behest of her husband, mother-in-law Sarla Gupta, and father-in-law Pawan Gupta. Neeraj claimed that a deal worth Rs 20 lakh had been agreed upon, and he even went to jail as per the agreement.
According to sources, Neeraj has accused the police of exonerating the true masterminds and demanded a fresh investigation. He has also reportedly provided new evidence related to the case.
“Anjali’s mother-in-law, father-in-law, husband, and one Dushyant Sharma called me to their shop and told me, ‘You need to get Anjali killed. She has been harassing us, taken all the property under her control, and filed many cases against us’,” the complaint said.
Neeraj claimed he was promised Rs 20 lakh and five shops located in TP Nagar, Meerut. “When the police arrested us, we did not reveal the names of Anjali’s in-laws. Nor did we provide any information about them because we had a financial agreement. Now, we regret our mistake, which is why we are disclosing all the details,” the shooter said.
Neeraj claimed the victim’s husband had informed him about her timings and when she would step out.
“These people had been harassing Anjali for many years, and I am a witness to this. Therefore, I request you to take strict action against all of them and charge them with conspiring to murder Anjali,” the complaint said.
Meerut City senior police officer Ayush Vikram said an investigation would be conducted, and action would be taken against the accused if fresh facts emerge.
